Welcome to our home!
We have been involved with Bullmastiffs for 17 years, first in Western Australia and now in Victoria.
Previously involved in breeding and training working Kelpies, and breeding Jack Russells for pets and as ratters, we eventually found ourselves in the position where we were unable to give these dogs the work they needed and decided to look around for another breed on which to focus.
We decided that we wanted a large breed and after much research we settled on the Bullmastiff and started looking for the right dog for us. After searching unsuccessfully in WA for several years, we found a suitable puppy for sale in NSW in 1999.
Our first boy Harley was sold to us as a pet and though not a great physical example of the breed, he stole our hearts with his giant personality and started our addiction to the Bullmastiff breed.
Sadly our beautiful Harley is no longer with us, but we now live with five Bullmastiffs (Polly, Harriet, Bram, Jinx and Louie) who are all very important in our lives.
Polly (Ch Bulavista Penny Arcade) is our foundation bitch for Banobrae Bullmastiffs, being the dam of our first Banobrae litter bred in mid 2006. You can read about our dogs on the Meet Our Dogs page.
Polly is the grand dam of Harriet and the great-grand dam of Bram and Piper - both from Harriet's first litter- ,and great-great-grandam of Jinx and Louie!.
At the beginning of 2011, we moved to a 38-acre property of rolling farmland in Central Victoria. We have established new dog facilities and are currently building a new house for the humans in the family.
The dogs enjoy the grassy paddocks and farm dams immensely, particularly in the heat of summer.
Our other dog passion is raw feeding or BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or Bones and Raw Food) as it is commonly known. We began learning about a raw diet when treating Harley for renal failure and, although it was too late to save Harley, we were well and truly converted by the positive changes we noticed in our other dogs. More details on raw feeding can be found on our Raw Diet page.
Our Dogs at Home
Our dogs get to enjoy the country life on our rural property in Central Victoria and live with horses and lots of wildlife.
Although each of the dogs have their own indoor/outdoor runs, they spend a lot of time hanging out together (when we are there to supervise) and their evenings are spent indoors with us. Our oldest Bullmastiff - Polly - sleeps indoors where we can regulate the temperature to keep her comfortable and keep a close eye on her.
It is not always possible to run several Bullmastiffs of the same sex together amicably but, with careful management, it works for us. All of our girls are related and all were introduced into the group as puppies.
Even when kenneled, the dogs can always see, smell and hear one another, which helps to maintain the relationships between all the dogs.
We believe that multiple Bullmastiff households can work well if the human members of the family establish and maintain their position as "pack leaders" at all times.
It is also important to ensure that feeding is always done in each dog's individual run so that meals are relaxed and leisurely - no wolfing of feed and no food guarding.
Girls in season can also require special management since they often get cranky. Our girls in season do not run with the other dogs. Also it is important to separate any male dogs on the property when a resident bitch is in season.
"He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion."
